Cable displacement sensors are also known as cable transducers, cable electronic rulers and cable encoders. As an ingenious structural design of linear displacement sensors, they fully combine the advantages of angular sensors and linear displacement sensors, evolving into a type of sensor with small installation size, compact structure, large measuring stroke and high precision, with strokes ranging from several hundred millimeters to more than ten meters.
The signal output modes of cable displacement sensors are divided into digital signal output and analog signal output. For the digital output type, options include incremental rotary encoders and absolute encoders, with output signals of square wave ABZ signals or Gray code signals. It can achieve a maximum stroke of 15000 mm and a maximum linear accuracy of 0.01%. The resolution can reach up to 0.001 mm/pulse depending on the configuration.
For the analog output type, choices cover precision potentiometers, Hall encoders and absolute encoders, with output signals including RS485, DP bus, 4-20 mA, 0-5 V, 0-10 V, serial SSI and resistance signals, etc. It has a maximum stroke of 15000 mm, an IP65 maximum protection grade for the operating environment, and can work in a wide temperature range of -45℃~+105℃.
The function of cable displacement sensors is to convert mechanical motion into electrical signals that can be measured, recorded or transmitted. A cable displacement sensor consists of an extensible stainless steel cable wound on a threaded hub, which is connected to a precision rotary sensor. The sensor can be an incremental encoder, absolute encoder, hybrid or conductive plastic rotary potentiometer, synchro or resolver.
In operation, the cable displacement sensor is mounted at a fixed position, with the cable attached to the moving object. The linear motion direction of the cable is aligned with the motion axis of the moving object. When motion occurs, the cable stretches and contracts. An internal spring ensures a constant tension of the cable. The threaded hub drives the precision rotary sensor to rotate, outputting an electrical signal proportional to the moving distance of the cable. The displacement, direction or speed of the moving object can be derived by measuring the output signal.
Common parameters include measuring stroke, output signal mode, linearity, repeatability, resolution, cable diameter specification, cable outlet tension, maximum round-trip speed, weight, input resistance value, power, operating voltage, operating temperature, vibration, protection grade, etc.
Cable displacement sensors are particularly suitable for dimensional measurement and position control in linear guide rail systems, hydraulic cylinder systems, testing machines, telescopic systems, warehouse position positioning, pressure machinery, papermaking machinery, textile machinery, metal sheet machinery, packaging machinery, printing machinery, level controllers, construction machinery and other equipment. They are especially ideal for the control of electro-hydraulic servo universal testing machines, and can completely replace grating rulers. Customization is available for other application scenarios, enabling high-precision measurement at low cost.
